Feral and stray cat populations are increasing across the nation, especially in areas where there is an absence of intervention strategies. Urban and rural cat populations are not identical, and should not be treated as such. However, among the two factions, there are some areas that do overlap, such as the underlying motivation of the caretakers and keepers, as well as the undesirable outcome upon the cats, the ecology, and the neighboring environment.
There are many opinions surrounding their care, control, and impact on society. In particular, urban areas must fashion improved solutions or opportunities relevant to their care and/or control so as to minimize the impact on the animals as well as society as a whole. Community discussions are needed to address this growing problem.
